To identify and apply general research ethical principles, the Regional Health Research and Development Consortium XI (RHRDC XI) with the assistance of the Regional Ethics Monitoring Board XI (REMB XI), facilitated a Basic Research Ethics Training on September 9 to 10, 2020.  

Davao Region has been recognized as one of the most active regions in crafting good research. Good research must be both scientific and ethical. An ethically sound research must adhere to ethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, and respect for person and justice, and with gender and cultural sensitivity. The Basic Research Ethics Training (BRET) aims to introduce the basic principles of protecting human participants. Dr. Angeles T. Alora and Dr. Ricardo M. Manalastas, from the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), shared their expertise to 30 participants from various institutions in the region. The training consists of lectures, breakout sessions for group work activities and reporting of group assignments.

Though the pandemic has many challenges, there are ways to communicate and educate the public. This training in particular has a primary purpose of generating new knowledge, and the goal is to protect the rights and interests of the participants. Protecting humans is naturally a universal knowledge. Thus, the majority of our laws are for the protection of rights, safety and welfare of individuals.

The Regional Ethics Monitoring Board (REMB) XI thru the support of RHRDC XI would like to congratulate five (5) institutions in Davao Region who satisfactorily fulfilled the requirements for accreditation by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB). Level 1 awardee: Compostela Valley State College REC; Level 2 awardees: Davao Regional Medical Center REC, University of Mindanao REC and University of the Immaculate Conception REC; and Level 3 awardee: Metro Davao Medical Research Center, Inc.-Anda River Medical Center Cluster REC. REMB XI is proud to be part of your journey for PHREB accreditation. Congratulations!

On November 7 & 8, 2019 the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) together with the Regional Ethics Monitoring Board (REMB) XI facilitated a training on Good Research Practice. The training was also endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) XI to all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the region. The objectives of the training are to enhance awareness of the importance of ethics in research, to recognize different vulnerabilities of study groups, to recognize the underlying ethical principles in the different international guidelines, and to practice ethical sensitivity in research.

The resource speakers for the training were Dr. Ricardo Manalastas, Chair of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board – Committee on Information, Dissemination, and Training Advocacy (PHREB-CIDTA), and Dr. Alvin S. Concha, Chair of the Regional Ethics Monitoring Board (REMB) XI. Plenary sessions were conducted, and workshops were also given to participants coming from the requesting institution, other participating HEIs, and hospitals. The training on Good Research Practice is one of advance workshops for Research Ethics Committees with established research system.

These participants are expected to improve their research ethics review in their own REC.
