Good Clinical Practice Training for PHREB Trainers
The Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) conducted a Good Clinical Practice training for its trainers (GCP) in March 7-10, 2017 at Toscana Hall, Torre Venezia Suites, Timog Avenue, Quezon City. The participants are members of PHREB-Committee on Information Dissemination, Training, and Advocacy (CIDTA) members and the National Ethics Committee (NEC) who conduct the training programs offered by PHREB such as Good Research Practice Training, Basic Research Ethics Training, SOP Workshop, and Research Ethics Committee Staff Training. Dr. Fidela Ll. Moreno, a visiting professor of the University of Santo Tomas and a consultant of the Intermountain Heart Institute, Intermountain Healthcare at Salt Lake City, Utah led the said training |

together with her co-facilitators, Dr. Joseph G. Marzo of PAREXEL Clinical Research Philippines and Ms. Ma. Rosary Anne Reyes of Otsuka Manila Research Center.
The training commenced with exercises for the participants to identify the challenges they have encountered in the conduct of the trainings and the key qualities a trainer must possess to be effective educators. Various elements such as the content, participants, goals, resources, tools, stage presence, and personal metrics were discussed as important factors to consider in what approach to use in the conduct of trainings. In the succeeding days, there was a GCP refresher for the participants as they discussed the principles of ICH-GCP, roles and responsibilities of investigators, investigator selection, and subject recruitment, among others. There were discussions on how to assess protocols based on the common issues that accompany clinical trials. On the last day of the training, the facilitators focused on the basics, challenges, and boundaries of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) as well as evaluation of the informed consent process drafted in various clinical protocols. The training is expected to harmonize the understanding of the trainers in communicating knowledge and be more effective trainers. |
PHREB trained PCHRD MD-PhD Scholars in Basic Research Ethics
The MD-PhD in Molecular Medicine Program of the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) and the University of the Philippines – Manila (UPM) under the Accelerated Science and Technology Development Program (ASTHRDP) aims to produce future physician-scientists in a career dedicated to the pursuit of basic and applied biomedical research. The MD-PhD Scholars who attended the training were from batch 7, batch 1, and batch 2 of the program which started in 2010. DOST-PCHRD monitors all 65 scholars. | |
The DOST-PCHRD tapped the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) to provide these scholars the knowledge on how to conduct ethical research. The training will assist the scholars in the development of their masteral or dissertation requirements. Dr. Maria Salome N. Vios and Dr. Sonia E. Bongala, Chair and Vice Chair respectively of the PHREB Committee on Standards and Accreditation (PHREB CSA) were the resource speakers for the basic ethics training. The speakers talked about the important role of Research Ethics Committee (REC) is in ensuring the welfare, safety, and protection of the research participants over any possible scientific advancements of a research protocol. The facilitators reminded the MD-PhD Scholars to treat RECs as a support institution in improving the outcomes of their research and not as a hindrance in implementing their research objectives. The trainers also discussed various international, national, and institutional controls that guide researchers to come up with ethical research.
The training was held at the C.O.M.E Conference Room, Paz Mendoza Hall, University of the Philippines – Manila in March 22-23, 2017. |
